Swallowing pills can be surprisingly difficult for some people, especially when dealing with larger capsules that seem to get stuck in the throat. However, a simple adjustment to your head position may make the process considerably easier. Unlike many traditional tablets, capsules are often less dense than water, meaning they tend to float rather than sink. When someone tilts their head backward while drinking, the capsule can move toward the front of the mouth instead of traveling smoothly toward the throat. Researchers have found that a technique known as the lean-forward method can help people swallow capsules more comfortably by taking a sip of water, placing their chin toward their chest and swallowing while leaning forward.

What makes this technique particularly interesting is that it goes against what many people instinctively do when taking medication. Most people assume throwing their head backward will help a pill slide down faster, but that movement isn’t necessarily helpful for floating capsules. A 2014 study published in Annals of Family Medicine found that the lean-forward technique improved capsule swallowing for many participants who previously struggled with taking pills. However, the method isn’t appropriate for every medication or everyone with swallowing difficulties, so following medication instructions remains important. It’s fascinating how something as simple as changing the angle of your head can make an everyday task noticeably easier. Some people spend their entire lives struggling to swallow capsules without realizing there might be a much simpler technique. 😭

Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel is in intensive care after a horror collision with goalkeeper Jesus Owono in Tenerife vs Andorra in Spain's Segunda Division.

De Miguel collided in added time with the score 2-2 and was taken by ambulance to hospital. Spanish media reported a cardiac arrest in the ambulance with resuscitation by paramedics. CD Tenerife said he was stable despite the severity of his condition in intensive care. The referee showed a red card and abandoned the match.
