A wide swath of Americans — including young voters and political independents — shifted their votes toward the Democrats in the midterms, according to the national results of CNN's Voter Poll. Those demographic changes, coupled with a broad rebuke of President Donald Trump that extended even to deeply red states, help explain the scope of the support that gave Democrats' historic congressional wins this year. The CNN Voter Poll, a successor to previous years' exit polls, combines traditional in-person interviews at polling places on Election Day with tens of thousands of interviews conducted nationwide in the weeks before the election. That scope makes the polls a powerful tool for understanding the demographic profile and political views of voters in this year's election. Even so, the Voter Poll is still a poll, with a margin for error — which means it's most useful when treated as an estimate, rather than a precise measurement. The blue wave was evident in the demographic breakdowns from the national results of the CNN Voter Poll, which show how voters split in their choice of House candidate for their district. Swipe to see a breakdown of the Voter Poll results, and read more at the link in our bio. Note: CNN Voter Polls, like exit polls in previous years, shed light on who came out to vote and what choices they made. The results combine pre-election interviews with those conducted at polling places to represent the full electorate. The final numbers will be weighted to match election results. CNN Voter Polls are from the Voter Poll conducted by SSRS.
Former Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms won Georgia’s governor race, becoming the first Black woman in US history to hold the office. Bottoms sought to spur Democratic voters while overcoming her competitor, Rick Jackson’s, narrow polling edge in the race to succeed Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, a Republican who’s barred by term limits from seeking reelection. Her election underscores Democrats’ growing competitiveness in Georgia, a longtime Republican stronghold that has emerged as one of the country’s most hotly watched battleground states.
