4 months agoThe earliest known written record of Nepali is the Dullu Inscription (also known as the Bhupal Damupal inscription), dated to 981 CE. This places the documented history of the language at over 1,000 years. However, linguistically, Nepali evolved from Sanskrit (dating back to ~1500 BCE) through intermediate stages of Prakrit and Apabhraṃśa (specifically Khasa Prakrit) between the 10th and 14th centuries. The language originated in the Sinja Valley of the Karnali region in western Nepal, where it was spoken by the Khas people (an Indo-Aryan group). Historically, it was known as Khas Kura (language of the Khas) and later Gorkhali before being officially named Nepali in the 20th century. (Just FYI)
