In 1976, Tracy Weisman watched the Tall Ships sail into Newport Harbor and felt a shared sense of great national pride. Fifty years later? “That’s a different story.”
“Some Birthday, America” is her candid, hopeful reckoning with a country turning 250: flags sliced open and stitched back together with zippers, quilts and textiles in red, white, blue, and black. A former speechwriter, she now tells the story in materials instead of words. On view at CUSP Gallery, Newport, June 27 to July 19. Full interview on awomensthing.com.
