Luna,

Every morning, I look to the window
Where you would smell the morning air.

When the sun falls onto the kitchen rug
I am still shocked that you aren’t curled up on top.

I automatically look up at the house from my car
Expecting your face to be there to greet me.

I instinctively save pretzels from the bag
Even though you aren’t here to claim them.

And lastly, when I lay my head down to sleep,
I expect to find a dog bone buried under our pillows.

Though countless people share this experience, the act of loving a dog is just inexplicably personal. You may have stopped breathing but parts of us both died that day. While I hate how much time painfully normalizes your absence, I’ve learned that this is a gift that grief actually gives us. It’s living proof that you impacted our lives in such a way that it can never be repeated.

Luna, you really peeled back the lid on my deep passion for dogs. I will remember you for so much longer than the time we had with each other and I’m thankful that we have our homestead in Maine named fittingly after you… so the story of you can live on through our lives and you will always be there to eternally define our future.

Happy Moon Day to the part of my life that I will never stop missing and am endlessly grateful for 🌙💫❤️‍🩹
