🇵🇷🫂 CHICAGO Tour with Xavi @diasporapapi ✨

This was a great way to learn more about Chicago’s Puerto Rican history. Especially how they preserve our history and culture 🇵🇷

Today June 29th is a significant day - its the birthdate of a man who sacrificed his life so that Puerto Rico could be free.

🇵🇷Pedro Albizu Campos🇵🇷

The Puerto Rican Diaspora in Chicago spent years trying to raise a statue of Don Pedro in the park. Soon they will have it. This statue in La Placita stands as a reminder that no matter where we are- it is our duty to honor the people who have fought for our freedom.

Special thanks to @national_pr_museum for hosting the screening of @albizufilm in Chicago. We hope to come back soon!

Look out for more videos in Chicago soon!

Humboldt Park, now renamed as Barrio Borikén through an official Taino ceremony hosted by the museum, has a demographic that was also primarily black and still maintains a strong presence of black youth and elders. La Casita de Don Pedro, the Flags, and the statue were all established despite the city’s efforts to thwart us from plantando bandera in yet another neighborhood where we would flourish. We established Lincoln Park, one of the city’s now more affluent neighborhoods, then kept getting actively displaced wherever we thrived. These statues mean DIGNITY and the casita was once a place where we activated as community with Bombazos and Plenazos all summer long. Qué viva la cultura!
