‘I’m really a lazy bitch, but I have a punitive super ego,’ says Colson Whitehead, an author I now like even more than I did before just for this one line.
This weekend I did things my super ego doesn't currently feel we have the luxury of time for. But I had to tell my super ego to shut up.
On Saturday morning, I had a meeting of minds with some of Love Letter's subscribers over coffee, pasteis de nata and sarmies at my favourite Cape Town bakery. (See stories.)
On Sunday, we had lunch at a fancy-shmancy new Italian restaurant.
All of this to celebrate my birthday, which is only tomorrow, and for which celebrations are planned until Thursday.
The internal tension about deadlines and exams got so intense on Friday, I had to leave my desk. I went to my favourite local client meeting spot to have a juice and to calm tf down. I discovered that they know my name!
The other nice thing that happened this weekend was that I made it on to the Top 100 Rising in Literature for the fifth time in Substack for Love Letter. (See stories.)
Full moon is on my actual birthday (30 June), but this morning's almost-there moonset long before the crack of dawn was pretty impressive.
Goodbye, Moon.
The inside of Lazari, which is my other office.
It's very affirming having a place like this in your life.
Thank you for knowing how I like my tea, for the excellent cake, yummy lunches, for knowing if my client is already seated, and for mysteriously knowing my name
@lazaricafe You all are just really lekker people. All of you.
