Brazil and Japan are facing each other on the World Cup stage, but this matchup is bigger than futebol.
These are two global cultural giants with massive contributions to hip-hop.
Brazil is known worldwide for futebol, samba, and funk, but it also has one of the deepest rap cultures on Earth. São Paulo especially became a foundation for political, street-level hip-hop, led by artists like Racionais MC’s, Sabotage, Emicida, and Criolo.
This is rap from the people, and rap for the people — from the favelas, from the working class, with resistance and street knowledge.
And Japan has one of the most respected underground hip-hop cultures in the world. This is the country where Tower Records still thrives, physical media still matters, and it feels like they almost single-handedly kept the hip-hop cassette and Walkman alive.
Japan gave the world builders like DJ Krush, Nujabes, Shing02, and Rhymester — artists that connected jazz, samples, lo-fi, lyricism, turntablism, and independent hip-hop.
So as the World Cup brings Brazil and Japan into competition on the field, it also reminds us of the undeniable contributions they have made to global hip-hop culture.
