I picked this book months before the world started talking about it.
Back in February, I was wandering through
@bahrisons_booksellers when I noticed a woman buying two copies for her book club. ( I chat with strangers in book shops it’s a thing I do 😅 ) I wasn’t part of one then, but something about the book drew me in, so I took a chance.
I had no idea it would go on to win the Women’s Prize for Fiction.
The Correspondent quietly became my favourite read of the year. It is a novel about letters, forgiveness, memory, growing older, and the unexpected ways books can make us feel understood. Sybil Van Antwerp is one of those rare characters who stays with you long after you’ve turned the final page.
I wanted this review to stay completely spoiler free because some books deserve to be discovered exactly as they were written.
If you haven’t picked it already, trust me, you will love this epistolary 🙌🏻
Have you ever picked up a book on instinct before everyone else discovered it?
