Abdul El-Sayed just made history in Michigan. The Democrat defeated Trump backed Republican Mike Rogers to win the stateโ€™s open U.S. Senate seat, and he will become the first Muslim American ever to serve in the Senate. El-Sayed, a physician born in Michigan to Egyptian immigrant parents, previously ran the health departments in Detroit and Wayne County. He won despite Rogers and his allies outspending him roughly 3 to 2, a late campaign of attacks on his Muslim faith, and Democratic Rep. Haley Stevens, whom he beat in the primary, endorsing Rogers just two days before the election. โ€œMichigan, we did it,โ€ El-Sayed told supporters in Detroit just before 2 a.m. He will take the seat held by retiring Democratic Sen. Gary Peters, adding to the Democratsโ€™ new Senate majority.

US President Donald Trumpโ€™s Republican Party has lost control of both chambers of Congress in the November 3 midterm elections, handing Democrats a major victory and setting up a tougher final two years of his presidency. The new balance of power takes effect when the incoming Congress assumes office in January 2027. Democrats secured victories well beyond the usual battlegrounds, flipping Senate seats in Republican strongholds including Texas, Kansas and South Carolina. Their gains also delivered a majority in the House of Representatives, ending Republicansโ€™ unified control of Washington. The result followed a campaign dominated by concerns over living costs, tariffs and the war with Iran. Reuters reported that frustration over these issues helped Democrats make substantial gains in areas that had backed Trump just two years earlier. What does this mean for Trump? His administration will face an opposition-controlled Congress with the power to block legislation, investigate government decisions and demand concessions on spending. Democratic control of the Senate also creates a major obstacle for presidential appointments, including judicial nominees requiring confirmation. However, claims that โ€œno bills will pass for the next two yearsโ€ are incorrect. Legislation can still become law if both chambers agree and the president approves it, or Congress overrides a veto. The likely consequence is greater negotiation and legislative deadlock over contentious proposalsโ€”not a complete halt to lawmaking. Trump remains president. But from January, advancing his legislative agenda will require support from the party that has just defeated his Republicans at the ballot box.

James Thomas has been running the New York City Marathon since 1980, and tonight he completed his 43rd. After crossing the finish line as the last man in the race, he told me this would be his final marathon. His mind still wants to keep going, but his body can no longer do it. What an incredible way to close this chapter. Congratulations on 43 New York City Marathons, James. โค๏ธ
