This Project took a lot of Time money and energy to complete But was such a liberating experience albeit gruelling and relenting at times.
One of the Reasons we endeavoured to do these spots is because Melbourne basically has so many safe spaces for graffiti (chill walls-drains-alleyways-and basically anywhere on the Northside like Brunswick/fitzroy/collingwood etc etc.
These are all great places to do graffiti but as I grow older I think and feel that they are all somewhat saturated and sterile in a sense becoming a caricature of what graffiti means to me, it all just becomes a sea of noise where tags throwies and pieces won’t get buffed the next day and there’s no real risk.
To me, Graffiti has the most impact when it looks like it doesn’t belong where it was marked, when it makes the general populace feel an awe of discomfort or a yearning to go out and create their own mark.
Seeing graffiti on the Trains and the Train lines and station underplatforms always would inspire me to go out and try produce something dope, crews like ID, TSF, AFP , WCA and heaps of other heavy hitters would adorn the lines with full scale productions carried out during the wee hours of the night and morning ,the pieces would always have an element of WABI SABI due to constraints of painting with obstacles and time limitations and the threat of getting rushed- all factors that sitting at a wall all day cannot produce (usually having me feeling like Im polishing a turd) but i digress…..
It’s sad to see that a large fraction of the masterpiece burner galleries of the train lines have faded off into obscurity under the dim blanket of grey beige and maroon. Train lines that used to connect and be a network for writers seemingly becoming a relic, a shell of its former self and while it may be dismal as it ensconces you from the the window of the train, it does however provide a blank canvas for new beginnings where free real estate was not always so free.
