In March 2018, Jennifer and Sarah Hart set out from their Washington home with their six adopted children in an SUV. To many, the family appeared joyful, frequently posting smiling photos and uplifting messages on social media. Behind that public image, however, neighbors and previous child welfare reports had documented ongoing concerns about the children’s welfare, including allegations of neglect.
On March 26, 2018, authorities discovered the family’s SUV at the bottom of a coastal cliff in California. Jennifer and Sarah, along with several of the children, were found inside the vehicle, while the remaining children were later confirmed to have also died. Because of the rugged coastline and difficult recovery conditions, some of the victims’ remains were only partially recovered.
Investigators later determined that the driver had been under the influence of alcohol, and toxicology reports identified additional substances in some of the children. The investigation concluded that the SUV had been intentionally driven off the cliff, citing the lack of skid marks or any evidence of braking before it left the roadway.
The tragedy received nationwide attention and prompted widespread scrutiny of child welfare oversight, as many questioned whether earlier warning signs and previous reports could have prevented the deaths.
