The Burger Trail 063 // Red Owl Tavern // Philadelphia PA
We asked a staff member (or maybe a volunteer) at the visitors center for a recommendation for lunch nearby that wasn’t a chain and he suggested the Red Owl Tavern. I was skeptical since this place was amidst so many tourist attractions - the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, you know, the big ones. But I wish I could go back and hug that man. Because the Red Owl Tavern my friends serves up a dynamite burger. It’s the only burger on a very simple menu - The Tavern Burger - and it comes with two 4oz patties, New School American, jalapeño jam, smoked bacon, chicken fried onions and jalapeños, and smoked barbecue mayo. I nixed the chicken fried jalapeños (#spicewimp) but kept the jalapeño jam. 100% right decision. This burger was love at first bite. I knew right away I was in for something special. The creation comes together beautifully and it’s full of savory flavor with a hint of sweet. I could’ve gone a little heavier on the smoked barbecue mayo but this easily gets an A on overall flavor. The bun is also good and it looks too tall for any human mouth upon arrival but I promise it squishes down. My side Caesar was also great though the tea looked like they used one personal tea bag to brew 5 gallons. But no one ever expected the Northeast to make good iced tea so we won’t hold that against them. After all, they really knew what they were doing with this burger. If you’re ever in Philly head on over. Cheers to Red Owl Tavern for creating a beautiful and tasty burger served in the most unlikely of tourist hotspots!
