Today would have been Swietlana "Swannie" Garbarska's 80th birthday.
There are some people whose impact can never truly be measured because so much of what they gave happened quietly, behind the scenes. My mother was one of them.
Born in Poland, she came to New York as a young woman with little more than courage and determination. A chance job behind the bar led her to meet my father, Jimmy Glenn, and together they built not only a marriage that would last more than forty years, but also Jimmy's Corner, a place that would become a New York institution.
Jimmy's Corner has always been synonymous with my father. But no one builds something that special alone. Those who know the story know there was an extraordinary woman beside him every step of the way. Together, they built a place whose warmth, character, and sense of family touched generations of people.
Swannie was caring beyond words, incredibly hardworking, fiercely tough, with a heart of gold and a sense of humor that could brighten any room. She welcomed generations of customers, worked countless long days without ever asking for recognition, and devoted herself completely to my father, our family, and the life they built together.
As her son, she was my biggest supporter, my fiercest advocate, and my best friend. She taught me that strength isn't loud. It's showing up every day, making sacrifices without expecting credit, finding humor in difficult moments, and believing in the people you love before they fully believe in themselves.
I miss her every day, but I still see her everywhere. I see it in the values she passed on, in the spirit of Jimmy's Corner, and in the countless lives she touched.
Mom, I feel like the luckiest son in the world because I got to be yours. Thank you for every sacrifice, every lesson, every laugh, and every ounce of love you gave us. You made every day brighter simply by being in it.
Happy 80th Birthday, Mom.
