I dislike labels bc why should I identify with something you hate ? But the truth is that I was raised in an Israeli home. I learned Hebrew instead of Arabic (my grandpa literally taught Arabic as his profession) and Polish/Yiddish (my dad is a Holocaust survivor). I visited my grandparents in Tel Aviv every year from birth until I eventually moved there when I was 14. This life history of me, Hila — a very specific Israeli name btw — is something I keep pushing away. I want to talk about living my best life and veggies and watersheds

I still haven’t figured out how to communicate my story, to tell you how I began to think differently about everything in this world. How at the root of it all I am just a girl who was given everything with major caveats, and raised in racist patriarchy USA and still healing from that.

I do think it’s important to uplift voices from Israel that are co-resisting, however few they may be. My next research topic will be about this. Anti-Zionist Israelis throughout history.

I’m glad I got to write this verse, to speak my truth in Hebrew for all the other Hebrew speakers that align. I don’t want the Jewish people to be associated with violent occupation. I stand in solidarity with my Palestinian friends.

I protect the Earth and every child’s joy and wonder. I’m doing my best and it never feels like enough but it is important to me that I keep trying.

✨✨✨
