One of Manchester’s great modern musical polymaths, performing live at a Lake District love-in.
Singer, producer, multi-instrumentalist, record-collector and all around aficionado of good shit, Pops’ music hits like a warm hug in your favourite pub on a miserable wet day. Encapsulating our beloved shared hometown, she packs an idiosyncratic charm into every note of her unique discography.
Starting out with local neo-soul collective Lovescene, PJ has been one busy old Manny bee since her balearic street soul belter collab with legend Ruf Dug. Between then and now she’s released her debut solo EP on Rhythm Section and put out a heady catalogue of features and collabs with UK legends ranging from Shy One to DNB royalty Lenzman. An SP office fave being her G-funk licked re-imagining of The Colours That Rise’s Deep Space last year.
A genuine eclecticist, PJ’s music takes her cues from across the entire soul-jazz-continuum, from babymaking R&B slo-jams, to smoky boudoir sophisti-pop, to unmistakably UK broken beat steppers. True to her name, derived from a disco-synth b-side baddie from the late great Prince, her music is personal, intimate and ultimately an absolute joy.
