French Firefighting Helicopter Crash During Water Pickup 2025
A firefighting helicopter crashed while attempting to refill its Bambi bucket from a lake during an aerial firefighting operation in France. According to initial reports, the helicopter’s tail rotor struck the water after a slight miscalculation of altitude while flying at extremely low level.
Fortunately, both crew members managed to escape the aircraft and sustained only minor injuries.
Water pickup operations are among the most demanding helicopter maneuvers. Pilots must maintain precise altitude, speed, and aircraft attitude while hovering just a few feet above the water. Even a small error or visual illusion caused by reflections on the water’s surface can lead to a serious accident.
This incident serves as a reminder of the extraordinary skill and risks involved in aerial firefighting. We are grateful that the crew survived and wish them a full and speedy recovery.
Note: The exact cause of the accident will be determined by the official investigation.
