My Gigas and I are finally on one accord and I am ecstatic! 🤩 It took her a while to acclimate to my home and attach to her moss pole, plus she was giving me wonky or stuck leaves, but now she is blessing me with beautiful shimmery foliage! Very beautiful (and thirsty) plant but so worth the efforts. 🩷🍃🪴

Yesterday, I watched a polar bear eat a plastic water bottle. It was devastating. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.

We managed to retrieve what was left of the bottle, but nearly half of it was already gone. Somewhere inside that polar bear’s digestive tract is the plastic it swallowed.

Here was an animal that has evolved over hundreds of thousands of years to survive one of the harshest environments on Earth, yet has no way of knowing the dangers of the plastic we leave behind.

We have failed them.

The Arctic should be one of the last places on Earth where a polar bear encounters our plastic. Yet here I was, watching one eat a discarded water bottle.

We talk so much about protecting wildlife, but what does that really mean if we can’t even keep their home free of our garbage?

And the worst part is that we have no idea what will happen to this bear. Ingested plastic can cause serious internal injuries, blockages and even death.

This is what our impact on the natural world looks like.

They deserve so much better.
