I just got back from Convocation in Los Angeles, a profoundly uplifting gathering of souls dedicated to the path of Self Realization through Kriya Yoga. This particular lineage of Kriya was brought to the United States by Paramahansa Yogananda in 1920, during a time when being any darker complexioned race with a spiritual belief that wasn't based in Christianity was incredibly taboo.
Despite that, Yogananda's message of divine love, meditation, and his fusion of the teachings of Christ and ancient Indian knowledge were so well received that even to this day thousands of people gather together under the umbrella of his lessons to awaken a deeper knowledge and peace within.
I have studied many teachers and have come to be devoted to Yogananda's teachings due to the purity of intent and the community that I have witnessed achieving miraculous things within their own lives through these disciplines.
The word Guru is now so distorted and abused by society that it scarcely means what ancient yogis knew it to be.
The word Guru means dispeller of darkness or ignorance, literally. These beings come to break the darkness within us in order for a person to achieve their God given purpose. Jesus is a Guru by this definition
I have followed false Gurus in my life and have learned the valuable lesson that as long as there are any alterior motives besides guiding a soul back to their God self (including sex, money, and power) this is not Guru. Period.
I'm grateful I spent time following false Gurus because now I have more awareness that it is imperative to never give my power away to anyone, but to instead turn inward.
That being said, I won't deny my truth any more. I have a true Guru that lived his whole life selflessly devoted to helping humanity and teaching Kriya Yoga for self realization, and I'm comfortable admitting that.
I chose the path of Self Realization Fellowship, but whether you sit in Teepee, attend church, meditate in the mornings, go to Temple for Puja, or sit quietly in nature, please help renew this world into something based in the love and joy God intended by committing to your spiritual practice. I know I will.
Bless you all.
Love,
Alyssa
