Today is World Lion Day. Just like so many other animal species, lions are decreasing in numbers in the wild. African lion numbers have dropped by about 40% since 2001, and Asiatic lions are struggling even more as they are now only found in one very small area in the Gir forest in India.

Lions are also often bred in some countries for tourist experiences, such as walking with lions or cubs, after which they cannot be released into the wild, for canned trophy hunting and for traditional medicines.

One of my favourite experiences while spending time in Africa is hearing the sound of wild lions calling to each other across the landscape as I fall asleep at night. Magical!
