🚨BIG ANNOUNCEMENT!🚨 I’m pleased to announce that I will be teaching 3 virtual courses at the end of August, focused on jazz and improvisation :) each course costs $250 in total and will meet 5 times over zoom. You will be assigned homework assignments to complete for the next week including transcriptions, technical exercises, and recording assignments.
1️⃣ The first class, “Jazz Styles Survey for Strings” is a transcription-led course. Each student will be expected to complete a transcription of an important jazz player from a key jazz era and will submit it for feedback the following week :) we will talk about phrasing, articulation and the transcription process — you will receive specific feedback on fingerings, bowings, and overall stylistic interpretation of each solo. I will help each student find a solo / transcription that suits each players’ current playing ability.
2️⃣ The second class, “Intro to Jazz Chords, Arpeggios, and Scales” is a practical, theory-driven course developed especially for classical cellists and violinists. Specific care will be taken to make sure each theory concept can be applied directly to the instrument with exercises / etudes. While this class focuses on theoretical concepts that come from the jazz language / jazz standards, these concepts can be applied to many styles outside of jazz, not limited to pop, rock, and fusion. If you struggle with chords, modes, pentatonics, or understanding jazz harmony in general, this class is for you!
3️⃣ The last class, “The Jazz Practice Lab”, is based on my own approach to practicing jazz as a cellist (although this system applies to all instruments!). I’m particularly excited about this class, because it will work more as a guided practice session each week, doing a deep dive into a specific aspect of jazz practice. At the end of the course, you should feel comfortable building a practice routine for yourself as an improviser and jazz musician, no matter what level you are at.
You can enroll in all of these courses by going to jazzcello.com/academy (or link in my bio). I’m limiting enrollment to 8 per class — don’t miss it! Please feel free to DM me with any questions :)
