My Best Friend, My Brother. — These are just some of many pictures over the years. Celebrating a rare soul, a lifelong friendship, and his musical legacy that changed the world.

I met Juan Atkins in 1982. Every time we ran into one another, he would ask me if I worked at a grocery store, beyond convinced he’d seen me there. To which I would always tell him, no man, everybody just look like me. That went on for about a year, until he finally stopped asking me and became curious about who I actually was. Looking back, it’s funny how something so simple led to one of the most meaningful friendships of my life.

Our friendship was about so much more than just making music. He would come pick me up, just to hang out. Whether that was to go to parties or to simply play our music at Belle Isle. We traveled to New York and Miami for music conferences. We laughed together. We even cut each other’s hair. As time went on, I got to know the people closest to him. His grandmother, whom he idolized, his brothers, his sister, and his mother. They became like family to me, and my family became his.

We were in our early 20s, navigating a new frontier with no blueprint. Those were some of the best times of my life: yes, we were having fun, but the friendship we were building was invaluable. I knew our friendship had reached another level when Juan started sharing his music with me and asking for my opinion. I felt honored. He trusted my ears, and I trusted his.

We grew even closer, impassioned by our mutual love for music, learning, and creating. Eventually, it became simple: if you saw Juan, you saw Eddie. If you saw Eddie, you saw Juan. In 1985, he helped me put together my first studio, teaching me how to create my own music, how to manipulate sound through synthesizers and MIDIs. And by 1986, he released my first record, “Goodbye Kiss,” under his label, Metroplex.

The international media may know the records and the parties, but they don’t know the everyday moments that made us brothers.

And I like it that way. Some things belong only to the people who lived them.

He wasn’t just my friend. He was my brother. And I am my brother’s keeper.

Rest in Power, Juan 🖤

Some betrayals don't happen in a single moment. They happen slowly, through the little things you never thought you'd have to question. The late replies, the changed behaviour, the distant conversations, and the feeling that something isn't right, even when they keep telling you everything is fine. 💔

And the worst part? You don't want to believe it.

You keep looking for reasons to trust them. You convince yourself that maybe they're just going through something. You ignore the signs because the thought of losing them hurts more than the truth.

But deep down, you already know.

You knew when their eyes stopped meeting yours. You knew when their words no longer matched their actions. You knew when loving them started feeling like begging for the bare minimum.

And still, you stayed.

You stayed because you remembered the person they used to be. You stayed because of the promises, the late-night conversations, the little moments, and all those beautiful memories you thought meant something.

You weren't asking for perfection. You weren't asking them to never make mistakes. You were just asking them not to destroy something you were genuinely trying to protect.

When they finally admitted what happened, perhaps you weren't even surprised. You were just heartbroken that the person you trusted enough to never hurt you became the very person you needed healing from.

And even then, you wanted to talk. You wanted answers. You wanted to understand why your love wasn't enough for them to be honest.

But sometimes, no explanation can undo what someone has done.

The hardest goodbye isn't always the one where you stop loving someone. Sometimes, it's the one where you still love them, still miss them, still wish things could have been different, but finally understand that staying would mean hurting yourself over and over again.

So you leave.

Not because you never cared. Not because the memories meant nothing. Not because moving on is easy.

You leave because you finally realise that your heart deserves the same loyalty it keeps giving to others.

Sepak bola dunia berduka. 🥀

Rest in Peace, Jeśus de Miguel. 🕊️
