When the patient’s family member starts using medical terminology a little TOO well…

Suddenly they’re asking about dermatomes, radiculopathy, medication half-lives, and whether the MRI findings actually correlate with the patient’s symptoms.

And I’m sitting there thinking… okay, which one of you works in healthcare?

But in all seriousness, having a family member who understands your medical history and can help advocate for you can be incredibly valuable, especially when you’re dealing with chronic pain. Appointments can be overwhelming, there can be a lot of information to process, and sometimes having another person there to listen, ask questions, and remember the plan makes a huge difference.

Just don’t be surprised when your doctor starts wondering where you did your residency.

"What do you do for work?" "I used to be a nurse" "oh well no wonder you look so calm and understand everything"

It's sad that three of my kids sound like this because of their own chronic pain, and they are all under 30. We scare a lot of doctors. But when you hurt and have multiple diagnoses, you learn.

O I like doing this. I get all the right lingo from my sister who us a Doctor and I make sure I say it with confidence. It's worked whilst fighting to get relatives care.... I do sometimes have to get my sister to translate answers though!

Except too many doctors get nervous when we talk medicine too fluently, especially women. Everyone thinks "medication or attention seeking", but only a few notice 45 years of chronic illness and a PhD in astrophysics (great combo for medical imaging interpretation. Bodies are like galaxies nearby...)

Stop judging patients and just listen. They are trying hard to explain something, that's all.

Well when I went to the ER with my daughter and the doctor came back with something they'd clearly printed off the Internet I learned I'd better read up too

Wow, I have only had positive experiences. My mom is an RN and I’ve read a lot. I always ask questions as well, so they know I likely have more knowledge than the average patient, but I recognize my limitations and want to learn more.

I have to actively dumb down how I talk when attending a doctor. Because in most cases they will think I’ve just doctor googled stuff rather than had years of education and training in clinical research in health
