The boy was fifteen, and his crime was a song. In February 2016, in Mosul, Ayham Hussein was caught listening to Western pop music on a portable CD player in his father’s grocery store in the Nabi Younis marketplace. ISIS fighters dragged him before a Sharia court, which sentenced him to death. On February 16, 2016, he was beheaded in a public square in the center of the city, and his body was handed to his family the same day. There was no law on the books banning Western music. The court invented the crime and then carried out the sentence, and the locals who watched were outraged, not ecstatic. That is what a theocracy does to a child who hums the wrong tune. It does not fine him. It does not lecture him. It puts his head on the ground in front of his neighbors and calls it justice. The men who did it believed music was a temptation and a corruption of the heart, a distraction from the remembrance of God, and they enforced that belief with a sword. A fifteen-year-old with a CD player was a threat to their order, and their order answered the only way it knows how. The execution happened in Mosul, Iraq, in February 2016, not in Michigan and not last week. The post ties it to Michigan anyway, and the tie is not the date. Michigan just elected a senator whose campaign courted voters in mosques where recorded sermons praised Hamas and Hezbollah, and Dearborn has become the city where crowds gather to cheer the same cause. The boy in Mosul has been dead ten years. The question the post asks is whether the court that killed him is a foreign horror or a domestic future, and whether the voters who just rewarded its apologists have already answered it.
