From the Worst Dressed list in 1996 to front row at a Versace show in 1997. Fuck yeah, that’s Courtney Love. But her interest in fashion went way back, long before the red carpets. In the 80s, her then-boyfriend’s mother, Bernadene, worked in Paramount’s costume department. She had costumed Faye Dunaway in Mommie Dearest (1981), and teenage Courtney would visit the set, developing a habit of rescuing antique pieces Bernadene had been asked to dispose of. β€œShe spent a lot of time with me there. She was fascinated by the clothes and so excited when she found something genuine,” Bernadene recalled in β€˜02. Courtney explained that her job involved throwing out clothes with dry rot: β€œOf course, I didn’t throw them out. I wore them every night. I was the best-dressed girl in Hollywood. I was wearing Lauren Bacall’s shoes, Grace Kelly’s dresses, and Frances Farmer’s hats.” Despite becoming a subculture fashion icon in the mid-90s for her kinderwh*re style, by January β€˜96 Courtney had landed on fashion critic Mr. Blackwell’s Worst Dressed list (v questionable). At the NYC Film Critics awards on January 5, β€˜97, she won Best Supporting Actress and confessed in her speech that she β€œhad never won anything but Worst Dressed. So this is nice.” Then things took a turn. Courtney got the β€œVogue makeover” and the fashion industry SAT UP. Suddenly some of the biggest names in fashion were courting her, desperate to dress her: Versace, Valentino, Prada, Dior, Fendi and Givenchy, to name a few. Most succeeded, as these slides show. After choosing Versace for the Oscars in March (that white dress had debuted on the Paris runway just 8 weeks earlier), she was invited to sit front row at Versace’s New York show the following month. β€œMy very first fashion show!” she shouted to the peasants behind her. She told reporters: β€œI’ve been so sucked into fashion. It’s strange. My mother ran the first store in Oregon that sold Birkenstocks. So you can understand my beauty problem. I grew up surrounded by sandals.” Swipe through for Courtney’s most iconic high-fashion and ready-to-wear looks, alongside their original runway appearances. #courtneylove #fashion #versace #90s #couture

There’s something beautiful about the innocence of a sleeping man. No responsibilities, no financial worries, no explaining why he liked a Facebook post from 2017. Just a peaceful human being temporarily disconnected from the consequences of existing. Unfortunately, somewhere nearby, the relationship’s complaint department is already open for business. The morning’s agenda could include breathing too loudly, forgetting something mentioned six months ago, or committing an offense that occurred exclusively in somebody else’s dream. Scientists say sleep helps the brain recover from stress. Married men call it hiding in the only place they haven’t figured out how to argue back.

Ted Cruz said the sentence nobody in Texas Republican politics thought they would ever hear. β€œTexas is blue. That is a hard sentence to utter. But Texas, today at least, is blue. As we sit here today, I am the only statewide elected Republican who remains in Texas.” He posted it Wednesday night, hours after the count finished what his warnings had predicted. Days before the election he had said on his podcast that Republicans could lose every single statewide race in Texas. They did. The sweep ran the whole ballot. Talarico beat Paxton 55.1 to 43 for the Senate seat, the first Democrat to win it since 1988. Hinojosa beat Abbott 52.8 to 45.7 for governor. Goodwin beat Patrick for lieutenant governor. Johnson took attorney general, Eckhardt took comptroller, Flores took land commissioner, Tucker took agriculture, Rosenthal took the Railroad Commission. Thirteen of fourteen statewide races. Cruz called it a Watergate-level repudiation and an ass-kicking, and he blamed the cost of living: food, gas, diesel, insurance, the prices voters feel every day. Cruz said he called Talarico to congratulate him, and he promised Texas will be red again. But the promise sits next to the record: two years ago Cruz carried Hispanics statewide by six points and swung the Rio Grande Valley red for the first time in a century. On Tuesday the same voters walked away. The warning was public, the numbers were public, and the party did not listen. Texas is blue today because the people who were told to wait for relief stopped waiting.
