Here’s what the race was wearing. I scanned the shoes of every runner who passed my cameras at mile 11.7 of the New York City Marathon. Nike led with 32% of identified shoes, ahead of ASICS and Adidas at 16% each and New Balance at 11%. Nike owned the front of the race, slipping from 41% among the fastest runners to 23% among the slowest. Carbon-plated racers fell from 85% to 40% as max-cushion and everyday trainers took over at the back. Faces blurred, runner data blind-hashed, nothing personal kept.
