eight tables between nice and the italian border that are worth the reservation and the travel. histories included, because a good restaurant is never just the food. save this post for your next trip, you’ll need it.

these tips are coming from someone who’s lived half of their life on the côte d’azur 🍀

comment which one of these you’d go to first ↓

african queen, beaulieu-sur-mer. on the port since 1969. the founders named it after the john huston film out of admiration for humphrey bogart, who ate here. half a century of stallone, tina turner, kate moss and bono drinking rosé, and the truffle pizza and table-mixed salade niçoise (plus the ICONIC artichoke salad) survived the 2023 takeover intact. order them all.

le plongeoir, nice. in the late 1800s this rock at the port entrance held an actual fishing boat, where belle époque nice took tea six metres above the waves. when the boat fell apart, architect rené livieri rebuilt the site in 1941 as diving platforms. now it’s a restaurant perched on the pillar itself, mediterranean menu, and no, you can’t jump. lol

le petit beefbar, nice. the small-format little sister of beefbar, the meat concept riccardo giraudi built in monaco. rare cuts, kobe, street food done in leather and marble, compressed into one intimate room on rue de la liberté. fun fact: giraudi is also the man who bought the african queen. the riviera is a small town.

la rotonde, nice. inside the negresco, the belle époque palace from 1912 whose facade is a national historic monument. the dining room is a carousel: golden horses leap from modern, stylish walls, an homage to jeanne augier, who owned the hotel for six decades and filled it with art. there’s more art in the hotel than in any museum in nice. the kitchen is run by virginie basselot, one of france’s meilleur ouvrier de france chefs. go for the food, stay for the art.

mayabay, monaco. on avenue princesse grace since 2006, and actually two kitchens in one address: a thai menu and a japanese menu, separate kitchens, both incredible. the menu is an actual BOOK, with pages on pages, each dish made to perfection. they’ll also run you around monaco in a tuk-tuk if you ask. i respect commit
