i just went to do some errands for my uni organization and decided to drop by my local bookstore to find this.
originally, i was trying to find Giovanni's Room by James Baldwin, and author i've been wanting to read for WAY TOO LONG now and i'm constantly thinking about him like a little bug chewing up the back of my brain. and right when i was about to leave, i saw "Plestia Alaqad" as the last book on a shelf. i released the loudest gasp like i just witnessed something holy that echoes throughout the quiet bookstore. it was the only copy left. so obviously i took it home with me.
it was surprising seeing this book in Macau, i thought i'd had to order it online or head back to the Philippines to buy it but no, some way or form, it has made it all the way here in this minuscule peninsula. taking space in a tiny bookstore that doesn't even hold half of the recommended reads in the booksta community. and in irony, taking space in my birthplace where i criticize people for inactivity and "out-of-touchness" because of their privilege of comfort and apolitical mindset.
The Eyes of Gaza by Plestia Alaqad made it all the way to Macau. taking up space to remind people that in the other side of the world, there are people who wish to have this life of comfort and mundanity. rather than a life of destruction, genoc!d3, b0mbs, and oppression.
the fight is not over.
and with millions of people, we will witness and testify the crimes against humanity, and we will testify on the Palestinian's behalf that this atrocities happened. and we will archive and remember.
