⚠️ Most physiotherapy students learn to apply a Hydrocollator Pack—but many forget the science behind it.
Here’s a quick revision:
♨️ What is it?
A superficial moist heat modality that transfers heat by conduction to reduce pain, muscle spasm, and improve tissue extensibility.
🌡️ Treatment Parameters
• Water temperature: 70–75°C
• Treatment time: 15–20 minutes
• Use 6–8 towel layers (or a commercial hot-pack cover) to prevent burns.
✅ Physiological Effects
• Vasodilation & increased blood flow
• Muscle relaxation
• Increased collagen extensibility
• Reduced joint stiffness
• Increased pain threshold (Gate Control Theory)
• Enhanced tissue flexibility before stretching or mobilisation
💡 Clinical Uses
✔️ Osteoarthritis
✔️ Chronic muscle spasm
✔️ Cervical/Lumbar spondylosis
✔️ Frozen shoulder
✔️ Chronic tendinitis
✔️ Fibromyalgia
✔️ Scar tissue management
✔️ Before stretching or manual therapy
🚫 Avoid Using In
❌ Acute inflammation or recent injury
❌ Active bleeding
❌ Malignancy
❌ DVT
❌ Open wounds
❌ Impaired sensation or circulation
❌ Severe peripheral vascular disease
❌ Severe oedema
📚 Remember: Heat is not the treatment—it is a preparatory modality. Always combine it with appropriate exercises, stretching, or manual therapy for the best outcomes.
