Like so many people in Frederiksted, I am devastated by the tragic murder of Officer Eustace Charles. My prayers are with his family, his fellow officers, and everyone in the Virgin Islands Police Department mourning the loss of a man who dedicated his life to protecting others.

Learning that Officer Charles was allegedly ambushed while simply leaving his home to report for duty makes this tragedy even more heartbreaking. No police officer should ever become a target for doing the job they swore to do. According to authorities, the investigation has already involved multiple arrests, recovered firearms, and the assistance of federal law enforcement agencies.

As someone born and raised in Frederiksted, I refuse to accept that this level of violence is our new normal. We must confront this crime wave with the urgency it demands. That means fully supporting our Virgin Islands Police Department while strengthening our partnerships with the FBI, ATF, DEA, Homeland Security Investigations, the U.S. Marshals Service, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office to take violent criminals and illegal guns off our streets.

Public safety is not a partisan issue. Every family deserves to feel safe in their own neighborhood, and every officer deserves to know that when they put on the badge, their government has given them every possible resource to succeed.

May Officer Eustace Charles rest in peace. The best way we can honor his sacrifice is not only with our words, but with decisive action to restore law, order, and safety throughout the Virgin Islands.
