This week’s top trending skincare vote is on azelaic acid. An ingredient that appears to be gaining popularity at a rapid pace.

My first introduction to azelaic acid was through Dr Sam Bunting and Gothamista who I consider to be key sources that began social media popularization.

There is also currently a bit of controversy surrounding azelaic acid as there is disagreement around its free acid form vs its salt form vs other derivatives. And where everything lands on the efficacy scale.

Personally speaking, I’m a purist when it comes to treatment actives. If you’re going to use something for acne or rosacea (i.e. medical condition) then it’s best to ensure proper evidence that it works.

This list I’m sharing here is consumer feedback which combines therapeutic and cosmetic function, do not read this list as a comparison of efficacy or equivalence.

In Australia, Finacea and Azclear are therapeutic goods and the only recognized products for the treatment of papulo-pustular rosacea and mild-to-moderate acne vulgaris. The other products on this list do not have therapeutic standing. This might be different depending on where you live.

For general visible skin soothing where medical condition is not a concern or if you live in a market where azelaic acid is not regulated as a medical active, then the others may be appealing.
