Field identification isn’t about guessing—it’s about observing. 👀🪨
Geologists identify rocks by combining multiple clues, not just one. Some of the most useful things to look at are:
• Color (but don’t rely on it alone—it can be misleading)
• Texture (grain size, crystal size, layering, vesicles, etc.)
• Mineral composition (what minerals you can recognize)
• Hardness (using the Mohs scale or simple scratch tests)
• Streak (the color of the mineral’s powder on a streak plate)
• Reaction with dilute HCl (carbonates like limestone fizz)
• Cleavage and fracture (how the sample breaks)
• Luster (metallic or non-metallic appearance)
• Density (how heavy it feels for its size)
• Magnetism (for certain minerals)
No single property tells the whole story. The best field identifications come from putting several observations together.
