If someone had pulled me aside as a young person in the foster care / family policing system and told me that one day I would be in Parliament answering questions about what got me through; speaking with ministers and community; advocating alongside mothers & fathers and helping to lead legal and social-policy conversations about justice and protection for other children I do not know that I would have believed them.
In the Youth Justice Inquiry, we covered so many complex areas. What stayed with me was the Select Committee’s intention and heart to do better within a system that people across all sides of politics know is not working and a clear urge of we can do better.

I was asked what the ingredients were that brought me to where I am today.

It is love.

It is people opening their homes.

It is people believing in me when I did not yet believe in myself.

It is the protective strength of my culture, my community and my people.

I am deeply grateful to have been in the room to give expert evidence in a field that we as a whole country can do better in. I am looking forward to working closely on the reforms ahead, and to ensuring children and young people have their rights recognised, upheld and met.

As a country, we can get this right. It is not impossible.

Ness, I found your story powerful, inspirational and heartbreaking. As a foster carer I will always be the child’s biggest supporter and reconnecting with family although complex at times, I find it’s always important to let the young people know how valued they are and they are encouraged to love the people who love them. Thanks for your insights, we can do better. I’m certainly giving it a red hot shot ❤️
