Jamel Robinson
SAW Gallery is pleased to present RELIEF, a solo exhibition by Harlem-born artist Jamel Robinson, marking the artist’s first exhibition with the gallery.
Robinson has developed a language of relief through painting, created through the repeated impact of boxing gloves saturated with paint. Adapted from a painting method pioneered by Japanese artist Ushio Shinohara, Robinson transforms the act of striking into a gesture of remembrance, endurance, and love.
Created following the death of the artist’s father during his year-long residency at Silver Art Projects at the World Trade Center, RELIEF presents the third chapter of this evolving body of work. Rather than illustrating grief, these paintings emerge through it. Across layered fields of blue, repeated impact becomes a record of labor, memory, and love made manifest.
The exhibition also introduces a new group of sculptural works developed during Robinson’s residency at SAW Gallery, extending the language of relief into three-dimensional form and expanding the artist’s ongoing exploration of grief, love, and material transformation.
The title RELIEF speaks to emotional release, the easing of burden, and the possibility of transformation. For Robinson, relief is not the absence of grief, but the form love takes as it is expressed through loss.
Jamel Robinson’s work is included in the collections of KADIST, the Hudson River Museum, and the Bunker Museum. Recent presentations include A Love Worth Fighting For at the Sugar Hill Children’s Museum of Art & Storytelling, the 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair, Untitled Art, Miami Beach, and a year-long residency at Silver Art Projects at the World Trade Center.
