beech tree
6 × 25 × 12 m
Roßmarkt, Frankfurt
Curated by Juliane von Herz and students from Frankfurt
This temporary sculpture for Roßmarkt—a main square in Frankfurt—consisted of a felled tree. The 25-meter-long beech tree lay across the square between a small green area and the Gutenberg monument.
A tree stump was dug into the green area next to three other trees. It seemed as if the tree had always been there and had been cut down with a single clean cut.
The felled tree was an undefined living being, a stranded whale on Roßmarkt whose hair caressed the Gutenberg monument.
It created space. It was material. One could carve matches from it or use it as a bridge. One could look into its many eyes or lie on top.
There was now a part of the square without handling instructions. The tree was in your way if you wanted to hurry across the wasteland of the square. It created something outside the framework of the Frankfurt Kitchen, independent of habitual acts like morning routines—refrigerator, bed, keyboard (Kühlschrank, Bett, Tastatur)—something indefinitely definite in an expensive, densely populated city.
