Save the date for Advancing Resilient Design through Criticism — a symposium focused on addressing resilience and adaptability challenges for rethinking campus environments at large.

Advancing Resilient Design through Criticism
Wed. September 23rd at 5:00 PM
Crosby Hall, Room 116, UB South Campus

This symposium will discuss The Resilient Campus, an international design competition that challenged architects, landscape architects, planners, and other allied design professionals to boldly envision UB’s South Campus as a socio-ecologically integrated landscape. Framed by a planetary polycrisis of climate change, biodiversity loss, and human vulnerability, the competition positions the University as a test site where design strategies can be replicable across all scales of the built environment.

Through imagining scenarios for campus landscapes and buildings, and more reciprocal relationships between the designed and the living environment, this competition, traveling exhibition, and now symposium seeks to thoughtfully advance, widely disseminate, and purposely promote transdisciplinary and transformative knowledge on designing for resilience.

An inspiring and necessary conversation. The most valuable aspect of this initiative is the understanding of the campus not simply as a collection of buildings, but as a living landscape of relationships between people, nature, knowledge and time. Resilience in architecture should not only mean the capacity to resist future crises, but the ability to learn, adapt and transform through dialogue with the living world. True criticism has always been more than judging forms; it is about questioning assumptions, revealing hidden connections and opening new possibilities for a more humane and ecological future. Perhaps the challenge of our time is not to control complexity, but to learn how to design with complexity, care and collective intelligence.
