PETER ERSKINE — EVERYTHING IS TIMEKEEPING (1989)! 🥁 Some of the most IMPORTANT lessons in drumming have NOTHING to do with speed or how many notes you can squeeze into a measure. And few drummers understand that better than PETER ERSKINE! In 1989, Peter released his instructional video Everything Is Timekeeping, and I think the philosophy behind that title is something EVERY drummer should understand. Because EVERYTHING we play is TIMEKEEPING! Whether it’s a simple groove, an elaborate fill, or an extended solo, our responsibility to the MUSIC never changes. Throughout the video, Peter explores jazz ride cymbal technique, independence, improvisation, and musical phrasing. But what fascinates me most is his approach to TIME and FEEL. He demonstrates how something as SIMPLE as playing quarter notes on a ride cymbal can become a lesson in TOUCH, DYNAMICS, and SWING. It’s not necessarily WHAT you play. It’s HOW you play it! Watching Peter perform alongside guitarist JOHN ABERCROMBIE and bassist MARC JOHNSON brings that philosophy to life. The way these musicians LISTEN and RESPOND to one another is extraordinary. Peter can play the simplest phrase imaginable and make it feel INCREDIBLE! No unnecessary tension. No desperate attempt to fill every available space. Just CONTROL, CONFIDENCE, and MUSICALITY. And we’re talking about a drummer whose career includes WEATHER REPORT, STEPS AHEAD, and collaborations with some of the greatest musicians in jazz! What I LOVE about this video is that the lessons extend FAR beyond jazz. ROCK, METAL, FUNK, JAZZ. It doesn’t matter. The fundamental responsibility is the same. Make the MUSIC FEEL GOOD! Because great timekeeping isn’t just about maintaining a consistent tempo. It’s about creating a FEEL that other musicians can build upon. Nearly four decades later, Everything Is Timekeeping remains an INCREDIBLE resource. If you haven’t seen it, I HIGHLY recommend checking it out! Sometimes the most impressive thing a drummer can do is make the SIMPLEST thing sound extraordinary. #drums #drumvideo #jazz #jazzdrums #jazzdrummer
48 hours in Doha with @CNN and the woman who taught me to be “truthful not neutral, and to never draw a false moral equivalence.” @camanpour We experimented with our upcoming talk show format for @mediacityqa at #CNNGlobalPerspectives and it was FANTASTIC. I always do my best to wear local designers when I travel for events and was so grateful to arrive at my hotel with a closet full of @1309studios. The BEST serendipitous surprise, running into my friend @maisonartc who is based in Marrakech but happened to have an exhibition in Doha opening just hours after I ran into him. Gah, I’m such a fan of his work. Rehearsals while wearing the brilliant Sudanese designer, @maisonbdn for my talk. Visiting the new @iheartarabi studios with @dinaalhajjar and the best content manager and guide in Doha, @ameera.explores ❤️ Reading @narcynarce’s Text Messages poetry book that I picked up at his @maktaba.bookshop in Montreal Felt like I matched the bathroom marble glam Final look, glam by @mariem.makeup_artist and hair by @hair_bywiam Chills listening to @itsdanaalmeer @itsdanaalmeer ❤️ Fitting for my talk with @maisonbdn and @pronto_me. Would love a reason to wear this gorgeous cape 🥲 Pumping and preserving milk while across 4 different countries in 5 days was a full time job in itself. my lucky hijab <3 OG @velascarves leopard with “choice is power” printed on it. there’s no hotel breakfast like a hotel breakfast in an Arab country. For years my Mama has wanted me to connect with the incredible @timashomali, creator of Al Rawabi School for Girls on Netflix. She was a part of our talk <3 #CNNGlobalPerspectives One of the ways I prep for my talk is transcribing pre meetings to integrate what feels most alive in everyone before we hit the stage. @1309studios <3

My forthcoming novel DIRE PACT is a lesbian witch rockstar romance! Someone once asked me which of them is the witch and which is the rockstar—and the answer is they’re both witches and both rockstars. I’ve gotta have two magical leads! 🎸Niko’s band Fanged Femme is ready for bigger stages, and opening for Dire Pact could be the key. 🎤Aster’s spent a decade charting Dire Pact’s rise to the top of the metal scene only to find herself miserable. 🔥One fiery performance will forever alter their careers and their hearts. I love these two so much, and I’m starstruck by @m.ieoi Brandi’s illustration of them. I’m hard at work on revisions and will have a cover reveal for y’all soon. DIRE PACT releases 2027 ❤️‍🔥
