🇬🇧What do these oil companies have in common? Good collective agreements? Respect for human rights? Exemplary business practices? In the first three months of the US-Israeli war against Iran, they made $93 billion in profits? Even without a phone-a-friend, you could probably guess that the answer is D. That is twice as much as during the same period last year. As the data analysed by The Guardian shows, that amounts to $700,000 a minute over those three months. While people in Iran are being cold-bloodedly killed by Israeli and American bombs, while the general public has to bear the costs of climate change, while people around the world have to pay every day for this war and the energy crisis it has triggered, oil companies are making indecent profits from human suffering and the destruction of the planet. At the same time, the world is literally burning because of heatwaves and droughts, which are becoming increasingly frequent as a result of climate change. Climate change that is driven by our consumption of fossil fuels. But guess what! Luxembourg is investing millions in these companies through our pension fund, the Fonds de compensation. According to a 2025 Greenpeace report, our pension fund invests €1.3 billion in coal, gas and oil companies. The FDC has invested around €96 million in the companies mentioned above. Of course, these are investments that are profitable for the pension fund, because these companies are handing out massive profits. But in doing so, the fund is rewarding war and the suffering of people caught up in war; the fund is financing the destruction of the planet and the diseases that result from it. The profits being made today are tomorrow’s losses for all of humanity. The Luxembourg government must stop co-financing the destruction of people and the planet and stop investing pension fund money in oil, gas and coal. On the international level, it should push for the introduction of a windfall tax, so that these dirty profits are taxed heavily in order to finance the energy transition. Here in Luxembourg, the government must do everything in its power to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels as quickly as possible.
