The road from Los Angeles to Las Vegas looks like a simple drive at first. Around 270 miles of Interstate 15 stretch across the Mojave Desert, making it seem like a straightforward few-hour trip.
On a quiet weekday, that’s usually the case. With lighter traffic, drivers can often make the journey in around four to five hours. But once the weekend rush begins, the same highway can feel like an entirely different road.
Friday afternoons bring thousands of travelers heading toward Las Vegas, while Sunday sends the traffic flowing back toward Los Angeles. As I-15 becomes packed, speeds drop, and the once-open desert highway can quickly turn into a long stream of brake lights.
Some of the worst congestion often happens near Primm, where traffic funnels through the Nevada–California border. Even a small disruption there can trigger massive backups.
Then there’s Cajon Pass, extreme desert heat, construction, and the limited number of alternative routes. Suddenly, a drive that should take four hours can stretch into an eight-hour ordeal.
That’s why experienced travelers know this route isn’t just about how far you’re going. It’s about when you choose to leave.
