It’s common in the industry for folks to recommend “more outlets” for nervy, overly aroused dogs.

More bitework, nosework, agility, dock diving etc. which are all good outlets for dogs BUT— they do not resolve behavioral issues. At all.

More activities for the dog do not get rid of anxiety, whining, inability to relax, aggression, reactivity, (insert ANY behavioral issue here)

All the activities do is keep the dog in a constant state of arousal, waiting for the next “fix” of adrenaline.

Now obviously we are not anti-exercise. All dogs need exercise. High drive dogs need even more. But they also need to learn how to turn drive OFF, once the fun is over.

They need to learn how to settle down. Be still. And eventually just fall asleep without needing to be entertained around the clock.

We work with dogs like this ALL the time. And 99.9% of the time, the dogs are getting plenty of exercise and outlets. They’ve just never been told to STOP. To stop whining, barking, pacing, etc.

It’s all learned skills. Teaching dogs to chill out is actually a skillset that most dogs need to learn. And unfortunately it’s not being talked about enough.

But it’s one of the biggest things we focus on in our training program for a reason.

Correcting unwanted behavior. Finally! I had the craziest malinois ever. PSA 3. Barked in the crate at the club constantly. I corrected it. He started relaxing in the crate.

I tell my client to sit in front of a lake (or just nature) with their dog, barefoot. No phone, no touch, no talk and no eye contact...everyday for fifteen mins..increasing the time... When you realize how hard it is, humans start realizing they might be the problem

Hey brother, love the video. I shot you DM. Would love to connect. I make a really cool quick release clip for the prong collar. Your clients will love it.

Structured play is different than mindless exercise.... I think people don't give their dog enough exercise as it is. It's not about more outlets, it lot of it comes down to the types of outlets and how they're prescribed... Outlets that have rules, goals, penalties and rewards. My dogs are all crackheads, and they have extreme drive outlets... Bite work, scent work, Mill running, spring pole, biologically appropriate and fulfilling outlets for their drives.... It's not about giving them less drugs. It's about giving them higher quality drugs and doing it at very specific times... If we're not doing " crackhead" activities they're sleeping and chilling..... If I didn't do those activities, they would still comply with what I asked but they would be deeply unfulfilled. And yes, I totally agree that food is not the answer.... Most dogs are way overfed anyway and are getting paid $100 bills to do a dollar's worth of work. Needs before Deeds.

“A flashy dog doesn’t have a bigger life, it just looks flashy.” Damn, that’s a bar.
