Researchers documented an unusual sexual bond between a male donkey and a bull during fieldwork in Ethiopia. The team was in the Ethiopian highlands to study gelada monkeys when they spotted Achille, a bull, and Patroclo, a male donkey, together in a nearby grazing area. Over a number of days, Achille was seen mounting Patroclo. Mounting was documented 51 times, with 34 of the events resulting in intromission. Another male donkey in the pasture flattened its ears and backed away when Achille tried the same thing. Patroclo never did, and appeared to present his hindquarters to the bull. The pair also licked, rubbed and nuzzled each other more than they did other animals, and they spent most of their observed time close together. According to the researchers, it appears to be the first documented case of a sustained same-sex sexual relationship between a bull and a donkey. The observations show animal sexual behavior can be a more complex social phenomenon than we might realize, the team says. Full story at the 🔗 in bio — @sciencealert 📖 Source: da Cruz et al. (2026). 📸: Dok.
