We’re thrilled to welcome our September Artist in Residence,
@lolepidolite (Lola Cuallado)!
Born in Lyon, France, in 1997, Lola currently lives and works in Munich, Germany. She recently received a grant from the Free State of Bavaria, bringing her to the United States for a six-month period of artistic research and exploration. Detroit and POPPS Packing are the final leg of her journey in the States.
This grant has brought many wonderful artists from the Bavarian region to Popps for over 10 years, and we’re excited to continue this informal, word-of-mouth residency exchange and the connections it creates.
Lola received her MFA from the Akademie der Bildenden Künste Munich in 2024 and her BFA from the École Supérieure d’Art et de Design Marseille Méditerranée in 2018. Her work has been exhibited at galleries and art institutions throughout Germany, including the BMW Foundation in Munich, MEWO Art Center in Memmingen, the Goethe-Institut in Munich, and salondergegenwart in Hamburg.
In her paintings, Lola takes a magnifying-glass approach to subjects we might otherwise pass by without a second glance. Her two contrasting series focus on construction machinery, as well as lichens and mosses, exploring the subtle effects of time on both inanimate objects and living organisms. Rusty metal, peeling paint, stone, moss, and lichen become landscapes of color, texture, decay, and growth.
We’re so happy to have Lola with us this September and look forward to seeing where her time at Popps takes her. Welcome, Lola!
