I remain profoundly grateful for the opportunity to champion an institution that consistently invites Atlanta audiences into stories of consequence- works that entertain us while also asking us to examine what we believe, inherit, and conceal.
@brandenjacobsjenkins’ Tony Award– and Pulitzer Prize–winning Purpose gathers the Jasper family beneath one roof for a long-overdue reunion. For generations, this prominent Black family has been associated with faith, political influence, activism, and moral leadership. When an outsider enters their carefully constructed world, however, private wounds and guarded truths begin pressing against the polished version of themselves they have presented to the public.
The play is fiercely intelligent, darkly funny, and emotionally exacting. It explores the distance between reputation and reality, as well as the burden children carry when a family’s legacy leaves little room for individual identity. Among its most meaningful reminders is that silence does not protect a family- it merely gives pain a place to deepen. Accountability and forgiveness are not interchangeable, love does not erase harm, and discovering one’s purpose may require separating personal truth from inherited expectation.
A tremendous ovation for Cornell Womack, Veanna Black,
@thedonnabiscoe,
@misterjayjones,
@victoriaosaku and
@travistavaristurner. This extraordinary ensemble navigates the story’s humor, volatility, tenderness, and moral complexity with remarkable precision. Every relationship feels lived-in, and even the quietest exchanges carry history.
Director
@keitharthurbolden guides the production with tremendous command, allowing the comedy to breathe without diminishing the gravity beneath it. The result is an evening that feels intimate in scale yet expansive in what it asks of us.
Purpose is the kind of theatre that follows you home, and continues its conversation long after the final scene.
