On September 3, Elías Arizcuren passed away in Madrid. He was the founder of Cello Octet Conjunto Ibérico (1989), the predecessor of Cello Octet Amsterdam.
As artistic director and conductor of Conjunto Ibérico, he brought more than sixty world premieres and commissioned works to life by composers including Xenakis, Berio, Boulez, Pärt, Glass and Gubaidulina. At his farewell concert during the Cello Biennale in 2008, he was appointed Knight of the Order of Orange-Nassau.
In 2008, we set out on our own path as a collective of cellists under the name, Cello Octet Amsterdam.
We are deeply grateful to Elías for founding and developing our ensemble and for the rich repertoire he created.
Elías Arizcuren was the first to recognize the limitless possibilities of eight cellos together. He embarked on the adventure — and we are still building on it today.
