Clinging dramatically to the steep southern slopes of the Lattari Mountains, Positano is one of the most enchanting and instantly recognisable towns on the Amalfi Coast, its pastel-coloured houses cascading almost vertically towards the deep blue of the Tyrrhenian Sea.
Known for its extraordinary cliffside setting, Positano unfolds through a maze of narrow alleyways, stairways and terraces, with bougainvillea, citrus trees and balconies punctuating the densely built slopes.
At the centre, the famous town rises above the waterfront with its distinctive majolica-tiled dome, beneath which is preserved a Byzantine icon of the Madonna and Child that has been venerated in Positano for centuries.
