OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said it's "quite terrible" for people to have RAM in their own computers rather than in data centers, arguing that in a supply-constrained environment you want maximum utilization in the cloud instead of the world's limited DRAM sitting in machines used maybe 5% of the time. Speaking to YouTuber Cheeky Pint about the AI industry's global compute shortage, he suggested the market's "invisible hand" is failing, likely because not every DRAM wafer is flowing straight into data centers to run AI models. The remark lands as the AI boom's memory scarcity drives up consumer hardware prices—used PS5 Pros hit $1,399 this month after an official price increase in March, the RTX 5080 vanished from Nvidia's marketplace, and the RTX 5090 was all but discontinued. Altman believes cloud-based AI is the future of computing, and Samsung's latest earnings call suggests memory is indeed being funneled toward data centers, meaning the RAM situation isn't expected to improve next year. 🎤: YT / Cheeky Pint podcast
