Why don’t rocket engineers use typical woven carbon fiber fabrics for solid rocket casings? 🧵🚫
It all comes down to the directional physics of thin-walled pressure vessels:
In a cylinder under internal pressure, Hoop Stress is exactly double the Longitudinal Stress.

💡 Why Unidirectional (UD) Fiber Wins:
No Wasted Strength: Woven carbon fabrics split their strength 50/50 in two directions. But in a rocket casing, the circumferential load is twice as high—meaning half the woven fiber strength is underutilized dead weight.

Direct Load Alignment: UD carbon fiber tows place 100% of their extreme tensile strength (~4,000+ MPa) along a single axis.
Precision Filament Winding: Using automated tow-placement, engineers wind UD fibers at dedicated 90^\circ hoop plies (to counter \sigma_H) and low-angle helical plies (to counter \sigma_L and dome expansion), placing structural mass only where the force vectors demand it.
That’s how vehicles like Vikram-1 achieve ultra-low structural mass fractions without sacrificing burst margins!
