Dear Nolan,
Happy 19th Birthday! It’s hard to believe you are celebrating your last year as a teenager. Watching you grow from that sweet, popular little boy into the wonderful young man you are today has brought me so much happiness and pride.
You have always been incredibly bright and naturally talented at so many things. Whether it’s hockey, baseball, golf, fishing—or now learning to play the guitar, which you have taken to with great success—you seem to have a natural ability to figure things out and make them your own. And, of course, you’ve always been a great dancer!
But as proud as I am of all your talents and accomplishments, what I admire most is the person you are. You have never needed to be the life of the party or the loudest person in the room. You are quiet and unassuming, but you are always paying attention and know exactly what is going on around you. Your friends have always been drawn to you, and I understand why. Your kind and gentle personality makes people feel comfortable, and you are someone they genuinely want to be around.
In April, you ran your very first marathon—the Boston Marathon—and you absolutely killed it! Twenty-six point two miles is no small accomplishment, and watching you take on that challenge with such determination made me incredibly proud. After all the years and miles Boston has meant to me personally, what an honor and a joy it was to have two of my grandchildren, you and Chloe, run Boston with me. That is a memory I will cherish forever.
And now another new adventure is just around the corner as you begin your freshman year at Providence College in September.
Nolan, just be yourself. That kind, bright, talented, thoughtful young man has already carried you through so many new beginnings, and he will carry you beautifully through this one too.
I couldn’t be prouder of you or more excited to see what 19 and this next chapter will bring. Wherever life takes you, remember that your Narnie will always be cheering you on and, as always, right there in your back pocket.
Happy 19th Birthday, Nolan! I love you more than words can say.
Love always, Narnie & Grampa Terry xoxo
