It’s been a while since I have done CDB. I find it fun and frustrating at the same time. Video with natural sound effects. Good ol’ lefty was having a day!

Decision Desk HQ has projected Byron Donalds as Florida’s next governor, defeating David Jolly in the race to succeed term-limited Ron DeSantis. The call came with the count still tight, more than 7.5 million votes tallied and Jolly holding a narrow raw-vote lead the remaining Republican counties were expected to erase. It was a finish that matched the campaign itself: close on paper, clear in the direction Florida kept choosing.

Donalds, who has represented Florida’s 19th District in Congress since 2021 after two terms in the Florida House, would become the state’s first Black governor and the first Black Republican elected governor in American history. That breakthrough was earned in a race where opponents argued all fall that Florida was ready to turn, and voters answered county by county by keeping the state on its course.

The result extends a Republican hold on the governor’s mansion that stretches back to 1999, and it settles the only question that ever really mattered in this race: whether Florida would protect what it built or hand it to a former Republican who left the party and came back asking to run it from the other side. Jolly bet that voters wanted a change of direction. The projection says they wanted the direction kept, with new leadership to carry it forward.
