When we first started hiking in New Zealand, especially in the North Island, we found this so annoying. Every single track entrance had a shoe cleaning station and we had no idea why.
We had read something about kauri dieback but did not really understand what it meant.
Then during our travels we stood in front of a kauri tree that was over 1,000 years old. And suddenly it all made sense.
When you are standing next to something that has been alive for that long, you feel so insignificant. And the thought that dirty shoes could kill it is just not something you can ignore after that.
So as annoying as it may seem, just do it. You can literally save a life. At least a tree's.
